Cheddar prices in Oceania at historic low levels in April [News Oceania n°9/2016]

Period: April 18 – 29, 2016

AUSTRALIA

  • Milk production: Expectations are for milk output this season to fall below the last season. Two primary factors often cited are feed tightness and high priced water for irrigation of pastures.

NEW ZEALAND

  • Milk production: during March was -0.8% lower than March 2015.

MILK PRODUCTION

  • Australia *: -0.74% (Jul 15 – Feb 16 vs. Jul 14 – Feb 15)
  • New Zealand *: -1.72% (Jun 15 – Mar 16 vs. Jun 14 – Mar 15)

BUTTER (82%): prices decreased. January to March butter export decreased year-over-year by -3% in New Zealand, while in Australia decreased by -15% during the period Jan-Feb 2016.

CHEDDAR CHEESE: upper range pricing decreased slightly. Average price in April, in USD, was the lowest since 2011. January to March cheese export increased year-over-year by +14% in New Zealand. It increased in Australia as well, by +12% during Jan-Feb 2016 period. The main importers are Japan and China.

SMP: prices increased slightly. Pricing is expected to narrowly move up or down, close to EU intervention pricing, at least through the first half of the year, due to volumes produced in the EU. January to March New Zealand export increased by +4% year-over-year, while Australian Jan-Feb export declined by -12%.

WMP: prices increased at the lower end of the range. Jan-Mar 2016 New Zealand export decreased by -16%. Also January to February Australian export decreased, by -22% year-over-year.

The GlobalDairyTrade Price Index for the latest auction, that took place today May 3, 2016, decreased by -1.4% if compared to the previous auction. The Index changes for the main commodities are:

  • Butter 82%: -5.5%
  • AMF: -1.6%
  • SMP: -3.6%
  • WMP: +0.7%
  • Cheddar: +1.8%
