Corn and Soybeans n°5/2016: estimates for the new season

The monthly report of May 2016 released by the United States Department of Agriculture (World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates Report – WASDE) presents the estimates for the new season 2016-17.

Global Corn production is projected at 1011 Mio t, +4.4% from the 2015-16 season, ending August 31. Higher production is expected in the United States (+6.1%), South Africa, European Union, Argentina, Russia and Ukraine.

Also the Soybean production is expected to increase (+2.6%) compared to the current marketing year, ending September 30, with a global crop of 324 Mio t. Production in Brazil and Argentina is expected to grow, while in the U.S. is expected to decrease (-3.3%) on lower harvested area and trend yields.

In China, the second Corn Producer, production for the new season is expected to decrease, while consumption is projected higher. However, the policies reducing incentives for Corn planting have supported an increase in Soybean production, of which China is the main importing Country.
