MILK PRODUCTION
- Australia *: -8.55% (Jul – Dec 16 vs. Jul – Dec 15)
- New Zealand *: -2.97% (Jun – Dec 16 vs. Jun – Dec 15)
BUTTER (82%): prices firmed. In New Zealand, fats are said to be in short supply, allowing butter processors to demand and receive a premium. In Australia, butter is considered to yield the best return among dairy commodities, and domestic consumption continues to challenge the ability of manufacturers to keep up with demand.
CHEDDAR CHEESE: prices firmed. Cheese manufacturers continue to find cheddar to be a more profitable use for current milk production than some other dairy products. Demand keeps relatively stable.
SMP: prices firmed, following six weeks of stable prices. The SMP manufactures believe that prices will not affect sales, since their largest customer base is in Asia, where culturally continuing relationships are an important factor.
WMP: prices are up slightly: weaker milk supplies are a factor.
Milk supplies remain tight and dairy fats are driving the best returns.
Note: · Assessments about market trend are expressed in US$; · * Dairy season: July, 1st – June, 30th (Australia), June, 1st – May, 31st (New Zealand).
