Italy: lower imports and more dairy exports, especially to Africa

Italian dairy exports between January and April increased in volume (+10.2%) and in value (+11.3%) on a trend basis, while imports declined (-12.7%). The trade balance is still negative: 838,087 tons imported against the 330,663 exported, but the balance sheet has improved.

In particular, imports to Italy of butter, milk and cream, cheeses (including hard non-DOP), declined.

In April 2017 (compared with April 2016), exports of the main cheeses increased in volume related to

  • Grated Cheese or Powder (+13.7%),
  • Fresh Cheese including mozzarella and ricotta (+10.9%),
  • Pecorino and Fiore Sardo (+ 5.3%),
  • Grana Padano and Parmigiano-Reggiano (+4%).

while exports decreased concerning

  • Provolone (-0.7%),
  • Gorgonzola (-2.1%),
  • Asiago, Montasio, Ragusano and Caciocavallo (-41%).

Italian exports expand to all areas in the world: France, Germany, UK, Spain, non-EU Europe, North America and Oceania. And it is boom (+90.76%) for dairy exports to Africa, where 23,000 tonnes of milk equivalent (ME) are sold, against 2,000 to Asia.

Encouraging signals for Grana Padano and Parmigiano-Reggiano (+7.7% exports in value), which increase by 11% in volume to the Netherlands and Canada. It is a positive reaction, in view of the Ceta.
