Oceania: lower WMP export to some oil producing countries [News Oceania n°3/2016]

Period: January 25 – February 05, 2016

AUSTRALIA

  • Milk production: in December was 4.48% below December 2014.
  • Weather situation: in late January rain helped boost milk production volumes in parts of Australia.
  • Milk Producers: in the northern region recent rains have helped pasture growth rebound, but continuing wetness may negatively affect hay quality. Fodder demand is high in southern Australia. Western Australia had good quality hay but poor yields.

NEW ZEALAND

  • Milk production: in December was down 1,57% from December 2014.
  • Weather situation: no information for the relevant period.

MILK PRODUCTION

  • Australia *: +0.19% (Jul-Dec 15 vs. Jul-Dec 14)
  • New Zealand *: -2.77% (Jun-Dec 15 vs. Jun-Dec 14)

BUTTER (82%): maximum prices slightly increased on the market, while GDT (GlobalDairyTrade) auction pricing showed some declines. Butter inventory building has slowed with manufacturers deciding it is more profitable to channel some milkfat into cheese, WMP or cream cheese.

CHEDDAR CHEESE: prices slightly increased, but there are concerns about weaker pricing in future months. New Zealand’s exports of cheese in 2015 increased 17.6%: Australia, Japan and China were the top customers. Australian cheese exports Jan-Nov 2015 were up 12.8%: Japan remained the largest customer.

SMP: prices are stable. Markets have a weak undertone. Production has fallen, leaving sales primarily met from inventories.

WMP: prices are stable. Markets have a weak undertone. Some potential buyers have decided to hold back due to weaker price signals from futures markets. Some export customers in oil producing countries show less interest in finalizing export contracts in the face of lower global oil prices.
