Abundant milk production: milk powders supply is above demand [News South America n°17/2018]

Period: August 20 – 31, 2018

Dairy cows in South America are steadily producing abundant milk volumes with adequate protein and fat levels. Regional milk and cream volumes are more than enough to meet most processing needs. In particular, cheese manufacturing and butter churning are more active.

Rain showers benefited immature wheat in the main production areas of southern Brazil. On the other hand, the icy weather slowed down the growth of winter grain in Argentina.

However, most dairy farmers did not have problems finding concentrate in the market. Low-priced corn is helping several milk producers to reduce feed costs,  promoting higher milk yields, and the quality of pasture on their farms is reported as fair to good.

SMP export prices moved down in South America. In general, the demand for SMP inside and outside the Mercosur bloc is steady compared to one month ago, but supply is higher. Therefore, the market is unbalanced at this point.

WMP export prices decreased. WMP production increased because of the higher farm milk intakes, while the demand from regional and international buyers is steady.
