China’s import: EU is the main SMP supplier [China's dairy import update]

The European Union is increasing its exports of skimmed milk powder (SMP) to China: in October it is the leading exporter of SMP to China, surpassing New Zealand, which has been the main supplier in the period January – October 2019.

Ireland is leading the climb with an increase in exported quantities of +154.9% in October. Of the SMP imported from China in October, 12% comes from Ireland.

The question remains: is the competitiveness of European SMP price, compared to that of New Zealand, the main driver of this increase?

Overall, China’s dairy imports in October 2019 increased by +7.3% in volume and decreased by -0.5% in value, compared with October 2018.
