Demand for hay is firming in Australia [News Oceania n ° 6/2018]

Period: March 5 – 16, 2018

In Australia, in the recent weeks, there has been little change in the demand for feed:

  • In the important dairy area of northern Queensland, good rain and temperatures have led to grazing conditions being very good. On the other hand, in southern Queensland, demand for hay and feed is firming.

  • Southern Australia is a source of feed supply in coming months. Hay export demand could result in price increases for the other Australian regions: this is a matter of concern among dairy producers.

In New Zealand, in the coming days, Fonterra is scheduled to release first half financial results, together with a possible milk price adjustment. According to many observers, recent GDT #207 results don’t suggest an increase.

In Oceania, Butter prices slightly decreased and remain lower than in Western Europe. SMP prices are steady, while WMP prices are weaker and quite close to those in Western Europe. Oceania Cheddar prices strengthened and are the highest during 2018.

January 2018 figures show higher exports of WMP and Cream, compared to January 2017, from New Zealand. For the other dairy products, the export volumes were lower, even from Australia.
