Following the dairy imports in real time

Dairy market changes, sometimes quite fast. The Operators need to pay close attention to the trends of the main dairy commodities internationally traded. Therefore, not only the products that they produce or intend to buy, but all the major commodities, such as

  • Whole Milk Powder (WMP),
  • Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP),
  • Butter (82%),
  • Anhydrous Milk Fat (AMF),
  • Cream,
  • Liquid Milk (packed).

Following these markets in detail requires a big effort. On the other hand, reading macroscopic data may be ineffective. To follow in real-time the imports of each commodity listed with an optimal degree of detail, we offer the chart shown below.

The chart

The chart

WMP has great importance in dairy world trade. The whole milk powder is the main product of the dairy industry in New Zealand, which is its main exporter, while the second largest exporter in the world is the European Union with 311,200 tonnes in the Jan-Sep 2017 period.

The chart lists the countries which import the biggest quantities of WMP, which is one of the products most frequently purchased by developing countries, often to be reconstituted and consumed as liquid milk.

Countries are sorted by imported quantities in the current year (figures in the right column). In the version of the table on the CLAL.it website, the data is constantly updated. The main importing country is China, which increased its purchased quantities by +15.5% in the Jan-Sep 2017 period compared to the same period of 2016. The second Player is Algeria, with an increase of +29.2% in the Jan-Aug period.

The central column highlights the data for the last month available, and in particular the growth of China, which in September more than tripled WMP imports compared to September 2016.

The table then serves as a basis for further analysis. Guided by the growth of Algeria’s imports, for example, an Operator could investigate on the suppliers, discovering that the EU, while remaining the second exporter to this country, increased the quantity by +146.7% in the Jan-Aug 2017 period.

Worldwide dairy import and export data, per country and per product, are accessible through the Dairy World Trade (DWT) area of the CLAL.it website.
