China +52.5% dairy import

In January 2018 China’s dairy imports reached a pick, with an increase +43.8% in volume and +52.5% in value compared to January 2017.
The most imported products in January, in terms of quantity, were:
- Whole milk powder (WMP): +28%, for a total of 139.000 ton (of which 137.000 from New Zealand)
- Bulk and packed Milk: +112%, for a total of 59.000 ton (of which 35.000 from the EU-28)
- Whey Powder: +45%, for a total of 50.000 ton (of which 27.000 from the U.S.)
- Skimmed milk powder (SMP): +42%, for a total of 46.000 ton (of which 39.000 from New Zealand)
The unit prices of Chinese imports in January 2018, if compared with January 2017, increased for most products, such as:
- Butter (+52.1%)
- Milk cream (+26.5%)
- Bulk and packed milk (+23.2%)
- WMP (+18.1%)
- Cheese (+10.0%)
As in previous years, even in the first month of 2018, Chinese imports were supported by the New Zealand-China Free Trade Agreement, an agreement that New Zealand can export dairy products to China at a reduced tariff rate.
