Will higher farm gate milk prices support production in Brazil? [News South America n°16/2018]

Period: August 6 – 17, 2018

Milk production in South America has been trending slightly down due to cooler temperatures hampering milk yields. Nevertheless, milk supply is enough to cover most manufacturing needs.

Demand for bottled and UHT milk is firm, from both educational institutions and retailers.

Poor-quality winter pastures are limiting milk production in the southern region of Brazil. Higher farm gate prices continue to motivate farmers’ confidence to produce more milk. A significant part of this rise on farmgate pricing is associated to the recent trucker strike.

SMP production is more active in South America: inventories are more available, while prices decrease. SMP export transactions to Brazil are less active than one month ago.

WMP production has been lower compared to one month ago, driven by the lower farm milk production. Inventories are steady to slightly down. WMP supply is below its demand: this situation supported WMP export prices, which shifted up.
