Italian dairy exports grew in volume, but value dropped

Italy exports in May 2015 compared to May 2014 increased in volumes for Butter (+13.8%), Cheese (+6.4%) while decreased for Whey (-3.9%).

Export of main cheese in May 2015 compared to May 2014 increased in volumes for Asiago, Montasio, Ragusano, Caciocavallo (+23.4%), Gorgonzola (+17.0%), Provolone (+3.0%), Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano (+0.6%) while decreased for Pecorino and Fiore Sardo (-8.7%).

The main Importers in the first 5 months of 2015 (year over year) were:

For Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano:

  • Germany import – accounting for 22% of market share – increased by 1%
  • USA import – accounting for 15% of market share – increased by 40%

For Grated or powered cheeses:

  • Germany import – accounting for 30% of market share – increased by 64%
  • France import – accounting for 28% of market share – increased by 0.3%

For Pecorino and Fiore Sardo:

  • USA import – accounting for 61% of market share – increased by 12%
  • Germany import – accounting for 9% of market share – increased by 0.2%

For Gorgonzola:

  • Germany import – accounting for 25% of market share – increased by 19.3%
  • France import – accounting for 20% of market share – increased by 1.1%

Italy exported year-to-date (Jan-May) 32% of total production of Grana Padano PDO and Parmigiano Reggiano PDO cheeses, while 34% of total Gorgonzola PDO cheese production was exported.
