Australian milk production projected to grow [News Oceania n°12/2017]

Period: August 21 – September 1, 2017

Recently improved milk production in Australia is driving some projections of growth for this season of 2% – 3%. Additional factors which underlie the projection are higher farmgate milk prices and weather holding good.

There is some confidence that these factors can override some potential mitigating factors:

  • herd reduction during recent rough periods for the farmers,
  • continuing debt obligations and
  • some firming of grain prices.

Most larger volume buyers of Butter are not in urgent need to restock, and upper Butter price range prices decreased because of their resistance.

At this time, Oceania Cheddar stocks, production and sales seem in general balance.

Oceania SMP prices weakened slightly, following the expectations of higher milk supplies in the new season.

Today’s GDT auction change in price index was +0.3%.
