Less milk in Oceania [News Oceania n°5/2016]

AUSTRALIA

  • Milk production: the 2015-16 production season is now estimated by Dairy Australia to be lower (-1.4%) than the previous season.
  • Weather situation: no information for this time period.

NEW ZEALAND

  • Milk production: this season to date, which is about 2/3 completed, is down from the previous season.
  • Weather situation: during February weather conditions were extremely dry in much of New Zealand, and adversely affected pasture growth.
  • Milk Producers: drought has caused producers to struggle to maintain milk output volumes.

MILK PRODUCTION

  • Australia *: -0.66% (Jul-Dec 15 vs. Jul-Dec 14)
  • New Zealand *: -2.67% (Jun 15 – Jan 16 vs. Jun 14 – Jan 15)

BUTTER (82%): prices decreased at the top of the range, influenced by lower regional demand, as well as pricing in the EU. Cream is moving into other products. In January New Zealand export was 3% below Jan 2015.

CHEDDAR CHEESE: prices decreased at the top of the range. Cheese production remains steady, especially to fill orders in the region where there is an advantage in transportation costs compared with other exporters. New Zealand export in January was 20.7% above Jan 2015 level.

SMP: prices decreased, reflecting a weak market with substantial milk to handle. New Zealand export in January was up 14.4% if compared to Jan 2015.

WMP: prices increased slightly at the bottom of the range. A number of customers globally have a preference for New Zealand WMP, which helps support the price parameters in a globally competitive market. Production continues to be steady at volumes sufficient to meet customer interest. In January New Zealand export was 5.7% higher than in Jan 2015.

Milk production in Oceania during the current production season is below previous season level.

Fonterra has reduced farmgate milk price forecasted for the 2015-16 season by 6% from $2.80 (NZ$4.15) per kgMS to $2.63 (NZ$3.90) per kgMS.
