Do Quality and Competitiveness reward EU dairy Export?

From the EU export data as of July 31, 2017, two elements make say “WOW!” :-)

  • Cheese: 488,380 t (+7.3%); € 2,304,450 (+13.7%);
  • Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP): 493,093 t (+39,4%); € 1,049,466 (+52.9%)

The main EU Cheese buyers in January-July, were: U.S. (77,150 t; +0.1%), Switzerland (56,153 t; +6%), Japan (35,170 t; +31%), South Korea (33,091 t; +28%) and Saudi Arabia (27,059 t; -1%).

Cheese is the EU’s core business (production and export): international consumers appreciate quality, diversity and technology.

In the first 7 months of 2017, the main SMP buyers were: Algeria (78,447 t; +50%), China (50,671 t; +72%), Indonesia (41,027 t; +48%), Philippines (34,434 t; +51%), Mexico (30,124 t; +409%), Vietnam (28,477 t; +131%). Mexico, whose historical supplier is the U.S., has started to import SMP from Spain for some months: historical reasons? The same language? Debate on NAFTA?

Instead, SMP production and trade, of which the EU is a key player with the U.S. and New Zealand, have achieved remarkable results thanks to balanced and competitive quotations.
